Pushed into obscurity by rock

The Rafael Film Center recently screened a documentary
called "Mighty Uke," a fascinating look at the global
resurgence of the ukulele. The filmmakers call it "the
most unlikely comeback in music history." "The
ukulele," the film announces, "has been reborn."
During the screening, real-life evidence of the
rebirth was right there in the theater. The crowd was
full of people who had their ukuleles with them so
they could play along with James Hill, one of the
world's top players, who performed after the
documentary.

In all corners of the borough ukuleles are flying off
music store shelves faster than you can say Tiny Tim,
leaving bemused salesmen wondering why. Explanations
for this wave of increasing sales are manifold,
ranging from recession-chic to the death of rock n'
roll. The spike in ukulele popularity comes after a
steady incline that has snowballed in recent months,
sending sales in some stores to 4 or 5 times where
they stood this time last year.

Ukuleles have gone viral
By Dan Fost
LA Times
July 25, 2009
Reporting from San Francisco — Thanks to the Internet,
the humble ukulele is pushing its recent popularity
well beyond anything that old-time performers Don Ho,
Arthur Godfrey or even Tiny Tim could imagine.
From YouTube to manufacturers' websites, from bulletin
boards to iPhone and BlackBerry applications that
mimic ukes and teach chords, the Internet has been
stoking the craze for nearly two years and unveiling
fresh talent. ¶ "The number of new players keeps going
up," said Mike DaSilva of Berkeley, who ditched a
20-year software career to make ukuleles. ¶ Guitar
maker C.F. Martin & Co. stopped producing ukes in 1994
because they had become so unpopular, but resumed in
2001 and is selling some of the handmade instruments
for as much as $10,000 -- even in these tough economic
times.

June 12th, 2009 Press
release from Kala Brand Music Co. For immediate
release. The U-Bass from KALA BRAND
MUSIC CO. is a break-through innovation both in
concept and sound.
The booming sound and amazing bass tone that the
pint-size instrument produces truly defies its size.
You will do a double-take when you see one being
played and then hear the booming sound this little guy
puts out. It is a short-scale bass on a baritone
ukulele body, but that is where the Ukulele part ends.
It produces the same pitches as a standard bass
guitar and is tuned in traditional bass tuning EADG.
This unique product is the result of a collaborative
effort between Kala Brand Music Co. and Owen Holt of
Road Toad Music. Owen has been building his custom
“Uke basses” for over 5 years and has seen his waiting
list grow to over a year.
